Module 1 Learning Summary
The PowerPoint, YouTube video, and chapter reading has been
very informative. I have learned the power of continuously assessing whether it
is formal or informal to better meet the needs of my students. When know where
our students are at we are better able to meet their needs and differentiate
their learning to help them be successful. The YouTube video was a very big
advocate for this process as was the book. While reading the chapter, I began
to reflect on how I teach my students in regards to reading. As I read I thought
of positive things I was doing and also things I could work on to better help
my students succeed in reading. I really enjoyed the information provided
during this module.
The youtube video was very interesting to watch as it showed
exactly how to be an explicit teacher of reading by continuously assessing
students to find their needs then teaching them accordingly. As I watched this
video I became very interested in how fluency was related to comprehension
which led me to my article analysis and the correlation between the two.
The reading of the text by Opitz was very helpful in
establishing a clear definition of reading diagnosis and improvement. I was intrigued
by the word diagnosis being used in the context of reading. I soon found out that diagnosis was simply
identifying strengths and needs of students and then determining the reasons
for the students’ needs/reading difficulties. As the chapter progressed, I
found the reading process models to be very interesting. I began to think about
how I teach reading in my own classroom and what model I use most. The
bottom-up and interactive model seem to be the most used models in my
classroom. After reading, I have found that maybe the interactive model is the
best technique to use as it covers all the factors at one time in relation to
each other. Further reading into chapter 2 led me to the findings of the roles
and expectations of a teacher. I feel that the qualities stated are things that
every teacher does, but we do not pay much attention to. What would happen if
we focused on these roles more intensely? I feel like I would become a better
teacher not only in reading, but across the curriculum.
The PowerPoint reminded me a lot about what I read in
chapters 1 and 2 of the text. I most enjoyed the section of the PowerPoint
titled Nothing Succeeds Like Success. This is a very true statement. As
teachers it is our responsibility to motivate our students. To do this we need
to build up what they know to help their confidence grow. By focusing in our
students specific needs and building their background knowledge, we build the
foundation for learning and moving on to more in-depth concepts. We can also
help our students be successful by provided many types of literature and
challenging them.
