Module 1: Activity 4 p. 14 Opitz

Use Table 1.1 “Summary of Proficient and Less Proficient Reading Behaviors” to observe a reader.  Highlight the characteristics you notice and provide an example of what you see.

I teach pre k in a school that is all pre k so I have had to adjust this to fit my students a little more as we are still in the pre-reading stage. Even though my students are in the pre-reading stage, many of the characteristics of a proficient and less proficient reader are present, even this early in the year. Right now my students are learning about words in a sentence. I read the sentence and they follow along with the pointy finger by pointing at each word. The ability to do this a leading them down the road to becoming a proficient reader. They are using what they hear me read to gain comprehension. After they point while I am reading it is then their turn to read and point at the same time (usually only a three or four word sentence). As students are reading, they often pick up on their own miscues if they have gotten to the last word and are still reading (saying) the words in the sentence. Their ability to do this is a beginning stage of proficient reading as they are able to pick up on their miscue, go back, and try to read thy sentence again making sure to point to each word in the sentence.

We are also learning how to use picture cues (picture walk) to gain understanding and make predictions about a story. By taking a picture walk my students are learning to use a mixture of visual print and their own background information based on what they see to make predictions about what they story is about. This too is a beginning stage to becoming a proficient reader.
