Module 6: Reading Reflection
Does any
of the information presented in Chapter 15 influence your personal philosophy
of reading? In what ways? How has your perspective this changed since you took
the DeFord TORP a few weeks ago?
Chapter
15 along with all the chapters of the text has had a great impact on the way I am
going to approach reading and writing next year. I have learned how to teach
phonics and phonemic awareness intertwined within reading and writing to create
a comprehensive literacy program, as opposed to separately. I have also learned
that this is the most beneficial way of teaching as it incorporates multiple
strategies together that build upon each other. This creates students who are
effective and efficient readers and writers. I feel like my perspective towards
reading and writing has completely changed and I am hoping this will lead to an
even bigger impact on my students learning this next year. I am now more aware
of how to better help my students when it comes to reading. I have learned many
new skills and strategies to help my students be successful. I am excited to
see how I can incorporate reading and writing workshop into my pre k classroom.
It will be a challenge, but I know the end result will be worth it. I feel like
this class has made me a better teacher and I cannot wait to see how these changes
will impact my students.
I agree- this semester has changed a lot of the ways I think about teaching reading and writing. I feel more confident in strategies and skills I can offer my students when they are struggling in specific areas, and I think that will make me a better teacher. I'm excited to work with my students and implement these new ideas!
ReplyDeleteI always viewed phonics as skills that are taught separately, but like you, now see the real value in teaching phonics and phonemic awareness integrated with other skills. This is so important for students of all ages! I feel a lot more confident knowing how to help students that struggle in specific areas of their reading comprehension and am really excited to get to work this school year!
ReplyDeleteThis summer semester has been a real eye opener for me. It has changed my thinking on reading, particularly towards phonics. I have always taught phonics in isolation, but I quickly realized the importance of integrating phonics into other components of a comprehensive literacy program. I'm really excited to implement everything I have learned in this reading course. I know it will have a great benefit on my students' learning.
