Module 5: Reading Reflection

Where does phonics instruction fit within a comprehensive literacy program? When and how would you teach phonics?

I think phonics instruction should be intertwined in the comprehensive literacy model. The comprehension literacy model promotes literacy development by using writing and reading together, as opposed to the skills based program that focuses solely on phonics. As we read and write it is still very important to have the background knowledge of letter sounds, blending, and segmenting which are skills taught during phonics. Weaver says in the text, “A comprehensive literacy program is more integrative, with skills and strategies taught and used in context and with emphasis upon the guided and sustained reading and writing of whole, meaningful texts, an emphasis that is solely needed to help children become both functionally and joyfully literate” (2002, p.279). This quote goes to show that the skills we learn during phonics are an integral part of reading and writing. Although we do not read or write focusing on individual letter sounds, our brains still has this background knowledge and it becomes more of a natural, unconscious thing we do.

When teaching phonics I believe reading and writing workshop are two great times to incorporate phonics strategies, especially during mini-lessons and shared reading. This allows the teacher to discuss and model the skills and students are able to immediately take what they have learned and put it into practice during sustained reading or writing.

  1. I agree with how phonics needs to be integrated into reading and writing workshop. I also feel that it can be specifically taught throughout all of the different components of a comprehensive literacy program. Mini-lessons and read-alouds are a great time for the teacher to model phonics skills and guided reading and sustained reading are times for the children to apply the skills that they know.

  2. Phonics instruction is emphasized so much in my school system. I am definitely going to teach phonics with a different approach this year after reading Weaver's text. I want my students to be able to apply what they learn from phonics when reading and writing rather than recalling rules just for spelling tests.

  3. I like the way that you mentioned that you would be able to teach phonics skills in reading and writing. It is amazing to me how many of the students are able to use phonics and read but they are not able to put the letter sounds together to be able to write. I think that it is very important that we teach it both ways.
