About Me

Hi my name is Shawnee. I graduated from Kennesaw State University in 2010. I am currently a prekindergarten teacher for the Cartersville City School System. I have taught prek for three years. I have been married to my husband for three years and we have an amazing one year old son. I love spending time with my family and make a point each day to have one-on-one time with my son.

I love being a teacher. I have dreamed of being a teacher since day one in kindergarten and was happy to finally achieve that dream in 2010. I love each and everyday of my job and enjoy how everyday is different! You never know what might happen when you're in prek, but that's what makes being a teacher so much fun! I enjoy seeing my students grow througout the year and see that light bulb light up when they have mastered something new!

Module 1: Article Analysis

After reading the text, I was interested in learning more about reading comprehension in general and its effects on students at various levels. I found an article that studied the relation between reading fluency and reading comprehension. To assess this relation, many assessments were given to the students as an ongoing process, much like the youtube video we watched discussed. In the study, researchers used 270 students from first and second grade. Students were assessed using several methods. For listening comprehension students were read aloud to and then asked to answer open ended questions. To assess list reading children read aloud as many words as they could in 45 seconds (the words increased in difficulty). For oral reading fluency, DIBELS 6 th edition was used. Silent reading fluency was assessed by having students read sentences silently then answer a series of true or false questions. Module 4 Summary

Module 4 Summary RTI The information given on the RTI and the process was very helpful and interesting. Being in pre k we do RTI, but it is not a process that we go through much. I was excited to be able to get a more in depth understanding of the RTI process and the three tiers. Tier one is the frontline of prevention and getting our students on the path they need to be on to be successful in their future. I have read several articles about the importance of RTI and how beginning this process for a student who is falling behind at an early age has dramatic and beneficial effect on the students’ future. The availability of this type of program that offers support and strategies to both student and teacher is an amazing resource.
