Module 4 Summary

Module 4 Summary

RTI
The information given on the RTI and the process was very helpful and interesting. Being in pre k we do RTI, but it is not a process that we go through much. I was excited to be able to get a more in depth understanding of the RTI process and the three tiers. Tier one is the frontline of prevention and getting our students on the path they need to be on to be successful in their future. I have read several articles about the importance of RTI and how beginning this process for a student who is falling behind at an early age has dramatic and beneficial effect on the students’ future. The availability of this type of program that offers support and strategies to both student and teacher is an amazing resource.

Videos:
Writing express with first graders- writing sentences (youtube)

I absolutely love the strategy the teacher in this video uses to teach students how to create and extend sentences. This activity is a great teaching tool as it models sentence creation and extension in a way that appeals to multiple learning types. I will definitely be visiting the website from this video for future ideas: www.writingexpress.net

PowerPoints: Literacy Strategies

As a teacher it is of the most importance to have a vast knowledge of literacy strategies in order to get our students ready for their future. Each of these powerpoints/pdfs presented various information and strategies on literacy.

Strategic Reading Instruction Strategies:
It is so important to have some form of a differentiated reading program. This allows all students to have their needs met in literacy content. This program involves the core (meets majorities needs), supplemental program (supports the core), and the intervention program (meeting needs for each student). This PowerPoint also presented numerous activities and strategies to use in all parts of literacy instruction whether it is alphabetic principal, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, and more.

Strategies for reading intervention:
Strategies for reading intervention are of the utmost importance especially with the new common core standards. It is important to remember especially as teacher for the younger ages that students do not grow out of reading difficulties. These difficulties will only progress, as they get older. The younger they are the better it is to implement intervention such as, RTI.

Conquer the Code:
It is very important for teachers to have a full understanding of literacy and the components of literacy. This powerpoint discussed the BIG 5: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and text comprehension. All of the big 5 are necessities for reading and comprehension, therefore it is important to have an in depth understanding of the each component.

Word Study and Vocabulary:
I was amazed to read that students gain 16-22 words a day and by ninth grade they have 88,000 words in their vocabulary. This fact alone shows how important it is to promote vocabulary instruction in our classroom. It is important to note that most vocabulary knowledge is learned incidentally through context while reading. This should make any teacher want to provide more reading time in their classroom and a bigger emphasis on good reading strategies such as, making connections and analogies.

Reading Strategies Vocabulary:
Many strategies were presented for developing vocabulary knowledge. These include learning walls that present content vocabulary/word walls, as well as, posters with important need to know concepts. Various games and activities will also promote this learning. For example, guess the word (give students five clues and they must guess the word), Wordo (like bingo but with words), KWL charts, Anticipation guides.

Webquests:
Webquests are such an exciting tool to use in the classroom. Webquests integrate content learning with various Internet activities to give students a more in depth knowledge of chosen topics. Students are given multiple missions/tasks to complete as they travel though the webquest. They also give teachers the ability to differentiate instruction while all students are still learning the same content which is a must for the common core. They take time and lots of upfront preparation, but in the end they create a learning experiences that students will never forget!
