Module 2
This has been my favorite module so far! I continuously found
myself saving pictures and screen shots of various ideas I want to print and
use in my classroom now and in the future.
Videos:
Goals for differentiated instruction
This video was very informative. I loved how it addresses
strategies for differentiated instruction. I use the strategy of differentiated
instruction in my own classroom, but I learned a lot from this video. It is important
to remember that differentiated instruction is about engaging and challenging
your students. It’s about creating flexible and varied approaches for students
to meet the learning outcomes. In my classroom, I group my students in various
ways and then choose an activity with a goal in mind to best fit the needs of
that particular group. I love the idea of allowing students to choose the
method they will use to present their learning. I will have to see how well
this works in pre k.
The story of differentiated instruction
This video was very interesting. I have never heard how
differentiated instruction came to be. It is nice to know that it was a teacher
researched strategy that was developed as a solution to a need. The teacher had
a class with various learning levels and had to find a way to meet all the
needs and help all the students in the classroom become successful and thus the
beginnings of differentiated instruction began. Flexible grouping that
addressed the needs of all the students developed through trial and error to become
the strategy of differentiated instruction we use today. This story reminded me
of our research projects and how all it took was a need to be met and “research”
completed by the teacher to develop a major strategy that we use in our
classrooms today.
PowerPoints:
Planning strategic reading lessons
This PowerPoint discussed the balanced literacy approach. This
consists of a teacher-directed lesson with purposefully grouped students with a
targeted strategy to increase fluency and comprehension. Ultimately the process
may lead to literature circles which I LOVE!! This approach reminded me a lot about
guided reading, as well as, the lesson plans we are creating for the students
we are tutoring. I am excited to use some of these ideas in my lessons from here
on out.
Literacy content reading and scaffolding
This PowerPoint focused on reading in academic areas which can
sometimes be difficult for students. This was by far my favorite part of our
module!!! I love the step by step process this PowerPoint took us through as to
how to successful teach literacy content reading, as well as, all the amazing websites
and resources. I found myself taking screen shots of a lot of the resources I
want to us in my classroom. Things like readinga-z.com for running records, the
blooms taxonomy chart with questions and activities for each question level,
and the scaffolding visual. The scaffolding visual opened my eyes to exactly
what scaffolding is. I will have this chart pinned above my desk for a constant
reminder!
